Phasing out coal-based electricity generation, is an absolute prerequisite for fulfilling European Union’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and the leadership role the EU strives to have in global climate policy. Such a major change must be accompanied by a comprehensive Just Transition strategy aiming at creating transformative pathways for local economies towards sustainable economic activities, as well as minimising hardships for workers and their communities in the associated industries, through active political and financial support.

SUPPORTING THE CLEAN ENERGY TRANSITION OF COAL-INTENSIVE REGIONS

The low-carbon energy shift of EU economies will have a profound economic & social impact on regions extensively involved in coal value chains. It is however acknowledged that this transition needs to be fair; EC’s "Clean Energy For All Europeans" package was set in place to speed the clean energy transition and growth & job creation. To this end, DeCarb will support public authorities to initiate efforts, join forces and exchange experiences to: a) identify growth strategies to mitigate the impact of decarbonisatoin, b) make the most of EU funds & financing tools, and c) promote public dialogue on conflicting interests.

Discussion on "Ensuring a fair and inclusive transition"

Europe Direct Stara Zagora will join a public dialogue directly related to Ensuring a fair and inclusive transition. The results of the Conference on the Future of Europe and the priorities of the European Commission for 2021 will be presented during the event. Emphasis will be placed on the European Green Deal, as the development of the topic is of great social and economic importance for the Region of Stara Zagora.

The event is organized in the form of a dialogue with the participation of citizens and various stakeholders to share their views on important issues on the EU agenda for the region. The topic of climate change and the environment is the second most important, according to EU citizens registered on the platform for the Conference on the Future of Europe. One of the three priority categories is related to ensuring a fair and inclusive transition. This will be at the heart of the discussion that Europe Direct Stara Zagora is organising on September the 29th.
